I live in Japan at the moment (it's terrible, don't go), and I like to collect books of Japanese clip art. I bought one that had a page of ten incomprehensible pictures of random nonsense. I asked someone what they were pictures of, and he said they were scenes from famous Japanese folk tales.

It made me realize the prominent role fairy/folk tales play in one's culture. I decided to draw 10 pictures of what I believe to be the ten most influential folk tales of western society. If you're a good citizen of the western world, they should all be incredibly obvious. If you're Japanese, maybe not so much.

"(it's terrible, don't go)" Is it really that bad? Everyone I know would sell their soul to go!

Great job with The Emperor's Clothes and City Mouse and Country Mouse, most people don't realize how often we reference those stories.

Have you tried showing this to Japanese? Did they actually failed to recognize them?

In retrospect, I think I should have included the Ugly Duckling and Chicken Little. I was trying to pick folk stories that are so deeply ingrained in our culture that we often unthinkingly reference them in casual conversation.

Not I, said the pig.

This is awesome. I think number 12 is my favorite, thanks to the expressions on the faces of the townspeople.
